Let's study a little about Russia! Since the 18th century, Russia has exerted great influence on Eastern European countries.
Early 20th century (1917) - In a period of wars and internal popular dissatisfaction. After the assassination of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, the Russian Revolution took place. With the Bolsheviks coming to power, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics began, led by Vladimir Ilyich Ulianov (nicknamed Lenin).
The USSR exerted strong political, economic and military influence in Eastern Europe. Little by little, it imposed the socialist regime. The republics are: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
During the post-war period, historical episodes such as popular uprisings in Eastern Europe (Hungary in 1956, Czechoslovakia Prague Spring 1968 and Poland supported by the Holy See – Karol Wojtyla 1970), weakening of popular support internally, Fall of the Berlin Wall, culminated in the dismantling of the USSR.
Mikhail Gorbachev promoted structural reforms in perestroika (economic restructuring) and glasnost (transparency and political system). In 1989, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, socialism in Europe lost strength. In 1991, the Soviet Union collapses and is dismantled. Boris Yeltsin, the first Russian president since the end of the USSR, takes office.
The creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a confederative organization formed by 12 former Soviet republics, begins. The disintegration of the USSR gave rise to the industrial modernization and economic opening of Russia that we know today in the 21st century!
